Renée Valentino
Psychologist, DBT credentialled clinician.
I am a psychologist and credentialled Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) clinician with almost 20 years’ experience working with children and young people across the public, private and education sectors. My work is grounded in a trauma-informed approach and focuses on supporting young people to build meaningful and fulfilling lives.
Throughout my career, I have worked across the community, public and private sectors supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community who have experienced significant mental illness and trauma. These experiences continue to inform my compassionate, culturally sensitive and affirming approach to therapy.
I have a particular interest in using DBT with young people and families, and I enjoy finding creative and practical ways to help young people learn and apply new skills in their everyday lives, often using music therapy and the arts to facilitate self-expression. I work collaboratively with the young person’s support network to strengthen the impact of therapy.
In addition to therapy, I provide supervision and training in DBT for clinicians and school psychologists across Tasmania. I am a Board Approved Supervisor and am passionate about supporting early-career psychologists as they develop their confidence, skills and professional identity.
I bring a person-centred approach to my work, where each person’s wisdom and values are respected and their strengths and qualities are recognised. I value authenticity, curiosity and genuine connection, and I strive to create a space where people feel safe, understood and supported.
I work primarily with adolescents and young adults aged between 12 and 25.
I support young people who experience intense emotions, difficulties in relationships, or challenges coping with distress. I work collaboratively with young people, their families and support networks where appropriate, recognising that change often happens best when the young person is at the centre of the conversation, and the important people around a young person are involved.
My services may be helpful for:
Young people experiencing emotional dysregulation.
Adolescents engaging in self-harm or high-risk behaviours.
Young people struggling with anxiety, depression or overwhelming stress.
Individuals experiencing trauma or complex life experiences.
Young people navigating identity development and relationship challenges.
Families seeking support to better understand and support their young person.
Psychologists, school staff and other professionals through supervision and training.

Proteas and nature photos?
You might notice the inclusion of a stylised protea within my logo. The protea represents resilience and growth in diverse conditions, reflecting my core belief in the capacity for meaningful change through therapy. As an ancient plant originating from the Gondwana continent, the protea has endured vast environmental shifts over time, demonstrating an ability to adapt and thrive in challenging circumstances. This symbolism closely aligns with the therapeutic process, where growth and strength can emerge even in the face of adversity.
You may also notice the inclusion of photographs taken in natural settings, captured during hikes, camping trips, and trail runs. These images reflect the important role that nature plays in my own wellbeing. I find that time in nature fosters a sense of calm, perspective, and restoration, particularly during periods of stress. As part of my personal self-care, I prioritise regular moments of nature-based mindfulness, an approach that also informs and supports my therapeutic practice.
